Judging by the description of the situation, I'd say he needs more than the
few dB mprovement this antenna will offer.

Either he will need a serious external antenna (which makes mobility
difficult), or some way of linking to the remote network, such as an AP in
client mode on an external antenna wired back to back with a local AP (on a
different channel) for the notebook to access.
