[MLB-WIRELESS] Melbwirelses DNS and Domain Names

There are some other major advantages of using an extention of global domain
naming standards (and leaving the DNS server internet connected). It means
that private IP DNS cache could be stored on a readily accessable place.

The problem with the way the melbwireless network is evolving is that if a
key link goes down that links you to your closest nameserver, you lose your
ability to resolve host names. This could be avoided by EVERY node running a
caching nameserver, but I think it's already difficult enough for people to
administer wireless gateways/firewalls/etc without adding additional
burdens.

If, however, we separate out a portion of the wireless.org.au subdomain to
use for private IP naming, then it means anyone who is internet connected
can slave off a master (or alternate) DNS server (or possibly just a cache).

I would be making my node's private DNS publicly accessable either way :)

If we don't want to to be confusing, we can partition it with a 'wireless
TLD', eg:

fenn.smelb.wan.melbourne.wireless.org.au
<http://www.fennscrazystuff.smelb.wan.melbourne.wireless.org.au> (or
whatever - the idea being that *.wan.melbwireless.org.au is private IP).

Alternatives could be:

fenn.smelb.melbourne.wan.wireless.org.au
or abbreviations of that, eg:
*.mlb.wan.wireless.org.au
*.syd.wan.wireless.org.au

etc, etc.

We have this lovely wireless.org.au domain - I suggest we use it :)

    Fenn.

yeah, but that matters little. We'd just need a couple of internet connected
nodes that can talk to the mw authoritative nameservers.

Ben,the only problem with that is that we arent as far as i know using
internet routable address'.

I like the idea of the region, but I think it's better to use global DNS
structure.

eg: nodexxx.cen.melbourne.wireless.org.au

So, is there anything happening with regards to some sort of domain
structure on the network? Anyone from WGRouting&Addressing looking at this
at the moment?

I've started messing with domain names over our way. Now bear with me here
because I don't know much about it or the terminology....

Here's a few thoughts.

We need something we all use that signifies we're melbwireless.
e.g. .wan .mw .melw

then perhaps something to signify regional areas.
e.g. .oef (outer east&foothills) .inn (inner north) .cen (central)

so you'd end up with something say www.wantirna-ap1.oef.mw

Now there's of course the other school of thought that we use domain names
that fit in with the rest of the world. But my feeling is that this comes
back we're going to need globaly routable IP's, etc then....And some
internet feeds, at which point you're looking at a wireless network with
open internet access, which is playing with fire in my opinion.

What are other peoples thoughts/ideas?
