Yeah, USB extenders are all fine and good. Looking at the USBv1.1 standard
12mbit USB should be able to be extended without trouble for about 100m
before the hosts times out waiting for a response from the device it's
given the token to. The trick is trying to make passive amplifiers in each
end that know when to switch trasmission direction, which in USB needs some
sort of state tracking - ergo a passive dumb solution with some opamps
isn't good enough. I have seen others for about US$200 but still that's
too friggin' expensive. I have a pile of Cypress EZ-USB controller chips
here waiting to be used for something, I am short on time but if anyone
here has 8051 and USB skills maybe we could come up with a simple solution
using these controllers...?
