[MLB-WIRELESS] Access Points (BSS) vs Ad-Hoc (IBSS)

As far as I know most of the backbone of the network will be running in 
IBSS (Ad-Hoc) mode. Apart from people who want to wire(less) up the local 
cafe strip etc or establish a point to point link with one mate down the 
road, is there much use for Access Points (BSS) within the basic network 
structure of melbwireless?

Having said this has anyone had any success / experience with any of the 
USB 802.11b devices? There was a bit of talk about these many months ago 
when the list was a bit smaller.
