it's not just about you. when you put a machine on the internet, you
have a responsibility to secure it so that it can't be hijacked and
become a nuisance to other internet users.

even if you don't keep anything even slightly confidential on the
machine, it can still be hijacked by spammers or viruses running on your
neighbours' machines or local script-kiddies or whatever.
