File sharing over 2 x WRT with WEPI don't know how the alchemy firmware
treats the WAN port, but under normal firmware you can't connect it to an
existing network with the WAN port. but that's all I can offer atm.

Subject: [MLB-WIRELESS] File sharing over 2 x WRT with WEP

  Hi all,

I’ve begun configuring my 4 node wireless setup and have simply started
with two Linksys WRT54G’s with Alchemy firmware and will expand to the 4
locations once I nail down the process for two.

The main Linksys will connect into an existing network which has an
internet router, etc so all it needs to do is get an IP address from the
existing network. The existing network therefore plugs into the WAN port on
the Linksys.

I want that main Linksys to point to the other location where there is no
internet. So the second location’s Linksys needs to be configured with DHCP
server enabled so if the link between the second and first location is lost,
both locations’ workstations will still be able to obtain IP addresses and
print to the local printer, etc.

So, I’ve configured as follows and it does work, but the problem is listed
after the configuration:

  Router 1 - Main
Internet Connection Type: Auto Configuration - DHCP
  Internal IP: 192.168.20.1
  Gateway: 192.168.20.1
  No DHCP server
  SSID and Router Name: Main
  Set up as AP
Uses WDS pointing to the Mac Address of Second router
remote admin enabled (because rest of network (192.168.1.x) connects to
linksys via WAN port)

  Router 2 - Second
  Internet Connection Type: Disable
  Internal IP: 192.168.20.2
  Gateway: 192.168.20.1
DHCP (range from .100 to .150)
  SSID and Router Name: Second
  Set up as AP
Uses WDS pointing to the Mac Address of Main router

  Problems:
  - I can't file share with wireless security enabled. If I turn on WEP or
WPA Pre-shared key, I try to connect over standard file sharing and it just
doesn’t connect. I can get net access and ping between locations so they are
talking... It just doesn’t like file sharing. Why so?

  - If I physically plug into the “Main” router, it gives me an IP address
(192.168.20.x – provided by the Second router) but gives me a gateway of
192.168.20.2 (and it should be .20.1). This results in an inability to get
web access because the gateway is wrong. How do I fix that?

I’ve spend the entire day working on this and it’s killing me!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Guy
