Usually diagrams help.

By the sounds of it, your network is like

laptop <> desktop <> server

But anyways, does your server with the modem know  how to reach the 10/8 
network?

If you try and ping from the server to the laptop, and get "no route to 
host" you'll need to manually enter a route (not sure of the syntax, I'm 
sure it'll hold your hand to enter it in).
