Well, it was a more informal meeting this time around. Once the hall and
BBQ was setup, everyone set about the task of building a WLAN. Tristan
supplied the AP, and we got a network happening. As for IP addresses, we
tried using DHCP using a Win XP box, which was partially successful. In
the end, a Red Hat 7.3 DHCP server was pressed into service which performed
much better. Most machines got their address of that, while the last few
stubborn ones were manually given static IPs.
Once the network was up, a Speak Freely conference server was setup and
everyone proceeded to setup Speak Freely and join the party. It was king
of like the heyday of CB. :) A number of people decided to try and see how
far they could get. One got to the Geebung pub, another across the far
side of the footy oval and a couple headed east, with ranges as much as
200m using various antennas.
Later in the evening, we switched from the server based conference to IP
multicasting, which got a little confusing for some, as some IP stacks
enforce looping back of one's own audio (e.g. Win 9x).
All in all, a night of fun tinkering. :)
