I agree.  While any metric is going to be rubbery, a more "concrete" metric
(and one which a couple of people are using) is the number of registrations
in the LocFinder.  Even that represents in the order of 500 people, but
since people have put their details there, one can presume they have _some_
interest in the project.  Of course, there are a few duplicate entries
(people who are going to setup an AP at home, work, in the car, tied to the
dog, etc...), but the majority are one entry per person.
