[MLB-WIRELESS] spam mail

Hi Rick,
I don't run this specific list, but I do run several others, so here's
my (unofficial) take...
Stopping spam to a mailing list can be quiet difficult - often a lot can
be filtered out, but not all. One simple way of fighting it would be to
disallow those addresses not subscribed from being able to post to the
list - the problem with this is that a lot of valid users have more than
one email address and may use one of a variety of addresses with which
to post something to the list. For them to have to change their mail
settings in order to post to the list in order to match the list's
strict guidelines could be seen as more than its worth, so setting a
strict rule like that creates more headaches than it's worth. Some
recent mailing list server software like Mailman can be quite clever
though and disallow posts if the mailing list is not on the specific
'to' or 'cc' header (i.e. bcc's would not get through) and also restrict
posts if the number of recipients exceeds a certain number (so posts to
say 50 addresses including the mailing list are rejected). I haven't
used majordomo (which is what this list uses) for a very very long time,
but it wasn't great for my needs back when I last used it. I'm not sure
how much better it is nowadays.
regards,
Mark
