Subject: The Broadbanding of Local Communities

Dear Barry,

Local Government Summit

The Broadbanding of Local Communities

Novotel - Brighton Le Sands - Sydney

12 December 2002

Over 50 representatives from local councils such as Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Townsville, Bendigo, Newcastle, Snowy Mountains, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie and Bathurst as well as State-, Federal Government and industry representatives will gather in Sydney on Thursday (12 December) to attend a local government summit on the broadbanding of local communities, an event initiated and organised by Paul Budde.

The aim of the Summit is to empower local councils to take charge of building local knowledge based society on new broadband networks. Awareness of the potential of broadband is increasing daily, and cities, regions and communities are beginning to perceive the social and economic benefits that can be derived from this technology. It is therefore of critical importance that cities and regional authorities take charge of the development of their knowledge-based environments.

A proactive local government is a vital element in the development of broadband - one that is potentially capable of delivering community benefits in education, healthcare, community services, job creation and export.

At this Summit Paul will present the Broadband Agenda - a plan covering the development of broadband and the strategies that should flow after it becomes established.

Worldwide, there are now over 1,000 community-driven broadband initiatives. In Australia there are, amongst others, projects in Canberra, Perth, Bendigo, Mildura and Newcastle; furthermore, well over 50 regional organisations have indicated their interest in regional projects.

This seminar will provide local organisations with a wealth of information on how to get started and there will be presentations from representatives of some of the cities that are already on the move.

The Local Government Summit is the third major broadband event organised by Paul Budde. In December 2001, he organised the National Broadband Summit, which brought together all the major players in the industry. He is also the initiator of UtiliTel - a project in which twelve of Australia's leading electricity utilities are pursuing a nationwide investigation into the opportunities associated with the broadband technology.

Representatives from leading local broadband projects will speak at the Summit:

a.. Kevan Penter, Manager Bright - Perth
b.. Bruce Winzar - City of Bendigo
c.. Phil Herrick, GM Southern Phone Co, Moruya (NSW)
d.. John Freeman, CEO Neigbourhood Cable - Mildura, Geelong, Ballarat
e.. Michael Delgigante, CEO TransAct - Canberra

Cost: Local council and regional representatives - $195 per person, Others - $295 (excl.GST)
