Gold Coast, Townsville, Bendigo, Newcastle, Snowy Mountains, Port Stephens, Lake
Macquarie and Bathurst as well as State-, Federal Government and industry representatives will gather in Sydney on Thursday (12 December) to attend a
local government summit on the broadbanding of local communities, an event initiated and organised by Paul Budde.</FONT></P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT size=2>The aim of the
Summit is to empower local councils to take charge of building local knowledge
based society on new broadband networks. Awareness of the potential of broadband
is increasing daily, and cities, regions and communities are beginning to perceive the social and economic benefits that can be derived from this
technology. It is therefore of critical importance that cities and regional authorities take charge of the development of their knowledge-based
environments.</FONT></P>

vital element in the development of broadband – one that is potentially capable
of delivering community benefits in education, healthcare, community services,

the Broadband Agenda – a plan covering the development of broadband and the
strategies that should flow after it becomes

1,000 community-driven broadband initiatives. In Australia there are, amongst
others, projects in Canberra, Perth, Bendigo, Mildura and Newcastle;
furthermore, well over 50 regional organisations have indicated their interest
in regional projects.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>

organisations with a wealth of information on how to get started and there will
be presentations from representatives of some of the cities that are already on

third major broadband event organised by Paul Budde. In December 2001, he organised the National Broadband Summit, which brought together all the major
players in the industry. He is also the initiator of UtiliTel – a project in
which twelve of Australia’s leading electricity utilities are pursuing a nationwide investigation into the opportunities associated with the broadband
technology.<o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>
