Can you give an example?

What will you do if ICANN decides to implement a .wlan TLD for real? Why
not use something of a _real_ TLD and avoid the problem altogether.

This is exactly what you _don't_ want to do. Remember, the only reason
the Internet hangs together is consistency in things like global routing
tables and global DNS. You don't want to mess with this.

I know .wlan is cute and I like the idea myself, but I can't see ICANN
giving it to us... :) So let's use something we _can_ get and register in
the global DNS. 'wlan.net' is taken (porn site), but 'wlan.net.au' is
still available. Or 'melbwireless.[org/asn].au'. Etc. (Mind you, we
don't want to get bogged down in arguing about what our [real] domain name
should be...)

We could do well to register something generically WLAN oriented and make
subdomains available to other like-minded collectives... Brownie points
and kudos are useful in smoothing the way for other projects.
