general files, http for my site (which would work with that whole
redirection thing happening) I'd like to maybe run a games server and a
mail server and other nice things like that aswell, basically where the
WLAN would be a nice extension of my LAN with features for the locals to
join in on the fun without all the setup issues that I'm having.

I think I need a linux box to control my network and run web stuff like
FTP and HTTP.
Routing with mac address handling as well as Node-to-Node connections
and so forth are a big worry for me. Running http ftp smtp pop3 etc etc
is a lesser issue but also a big worry.

After further research than what I'd previously done, I'm thinking I now
need a WRT54G unit.... and/or a PCI wireless card (or 2) which has
"Wireless card with Intersil Prism2 chipset " this is from a google
search where certain wireless communtiy lans used PCI WLAN cards and not
AP's.

I would have bought a WRT54G unit in your last bulk buy IF I KNEW WHY
they were worth buying and that I good get some support using it.

This leads me to the crunch, everywhere I go, (and I've been into all
sorts of forums and searchs and other areas) the biggest responce I get
is that I should do more research for myself and I should know more than
I do. Its like a club for all the experts and until your a self taught
expert you not a member. Now although I have spent a fair portion of
cash on a few things and I've certainly learnt ALOT from various people
I still cant get information from anyone about the HOW in relation to
quite a few things.

What I can do is, obtain a decent waveguide antenna (buying stuff is
easy) and hope that this will cover (about 90deg) all the NODES from
210deg through 300deg in the SW direction, that most nodes seem to be
from my location. I can use my Senao 100mw unit to that antenna (mast
mounted AP) with a short pigtail. Place that antenna up about 3 or 4
meters above the roof of my house (6 to 8 meters off the ground) and run
a long cat-5 cable (and power cable) back to my installed Mandrake10
linux box. This part of the operation I would think should be fine, give
or take that I may or maynot connect to these nodes as the area has
tree's which are tall and comman.

This would enable me to say that I have a running node and that this
node is connected to other services even though its not able to do
anything or connect to my existing LAN.

I NEED to ensure a few things before I built this mast (as best as I can
anyhow) and find out how to connect it to my LAN.

Is the antenna likely to connect to someone else ?
Is the AP I have able to be configured appropiately ( security / ip /
p2p / p2mp / etc ) for Secure Fixed Node to Node connections ? or should
I use a different AP or Wireless PCI card ?

I also would like to setup the Omni I have at the same time on the same
mast. This Antenna is to service local people ( eg allow me to stand on
the road out front of my place with my laptop and 'ping' back to say
clayton or maybe even you ! ) Now this Omni needs to be able to
determine who is trusted and who is not, I think this involves
mac-address filtering. I dont know how to do this or really anything
about it other than it exists. Maybe I need a WRT54G or a PCI wireless
card with Intersil Prism2 chipset or something else. I know that I will
need to be able to route connections directly to my own webpage (like
yours (Dan @GMR) which I had a play with when I picked up this 8db omni)
If I need to have a PCI wireless card or that a PCI wireless is easier
to configure then I'm happy to place my linux box in my roof near the
mast for a short coax run. But I need to know if this is the case.

I know that Dan (@GMR) runs a command line debian linux distro, and to
be honest if I could get enough assistance I'd be more than happy to do
the same but this is a big ask and I dont feel that its going to happen.
I've chosen Mandrake10 as it was fairly easy to get my hands on and its
an easy distro to install. If Mandrake is just not upto scratch then
I'll chase up a fedora or something, but no-one seems to be able to help
me even with my choice of distro let alone any help with it, other than
use 'this' where 'this' could mean just about anything !

What I dont need is help building things in the physical sense, the
Mast, Cabling, the PC, wiring etc.... What I do need is advice on what
to get / use, and How to set it up, (inc the software side of things).

So What I'm asking is for your advice.

What should I do from here ?
What would you do if you were me ?
Would you be willing to support me in achieving what you would do ?
What should I buy ? (I'm happy to buy quality items at a cost, money is
not a big issue if the value is there)
What distro should I try to obtain / use ? (I'll give debian a go if I
can get alot of advice/assistance with it, otherwise Fedora or Mandrake
?)
How should I setup my Node to achieve the results I'm after (and listed
earlier) ?

HHHEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPPP!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Phil.

Hi Andrew, All,

I've been trying to compile WRT54G firmware for myself but have hit a
few hurdles. Have sort of given up for now, but I'll try again soon
and
post my symptoms.

I've been thinking a lot about the essential applications a Melbourne
Wireless routing node needs, and how to get these into a WRT54G
firmware. I want to make it as easy as possible for non-linux-geeks to
get involved in the network.

I've noticed the new Sveasoft firmware has some interesting features,
including a wireless client mode that swaps the internal network
interfaces so that the wireless interface is treated as if it was the
WAN interface. It's not at a point yet where you could satisfactorily
set up a Melbourne Wireless node entirely via the web interface, but
it's getting closer. Certainly it is possible via the command line if
you've got some linux experience.

Has anyone got any suggestions for default settings in a firmware for
the WRT54G? I'd like to see these things working:

* OSPF working on the WAN and Wireless interfaces, with separately
settable area IDs for each interface...

* The latest version of Quagga ported to the WRT54G, Sveasoft is using
Zebra 0.92-something.

* NoCatSplash or Chillispot Captive portals, with a nice Melbourne
Wireless information webpage that pops up when someone attempts to
access a web page in their browser

You can Telnet or SSH into the box and have a play. The shell is quite
nice, it even has command completion (press TAB). I do miss MC though.
:)

I don't think that it's a good idea to put a directional antenna on one
of the antenna connections and an omni on the other. I don't think
antenna diversity works that way. But certainly give it a test, and
post your results! But I think you'd be better off connecting another
AP to one of the WRT54G's ports and using it as a client.

Dan

style=3D'font-size:
12.0pt'>Hi Andrew, All,

I've been trying to compile WRT54G firmware for myself but have hit =
a
few hurdles. Have sort of given up for now, but I'll try again =
soon
and
post my symptoms.

I've been thinking a lot about the essential applications a =
Melbourne
Wireless routing node needs, and how to get these into a WRT54G
firmware. I want to make it as easy as possible for =
non-linux-geeks to
get involved in the network.

I've noticed the new Sveasoft firmware has some interesting =
features,
including a wireless client mode that swaps the internal network
interfaces so that the wireless interface is treated as if it was =
the
WAN interface. It's not at a point yet where you could =
satisfactorily
set up a Melbourne Wireless node entirely via the web interface, but
it's getting closer. Certainly it is possible via the command line =
if
you've got some linux experience.

Has anyone got any suggestions for default settings in a firmware =
for
the WRT54G? I'd like to see these things working:

* OSPF working on the WAN and Wireless interfaces, with separately
settable area IDs for each interface...

* The latest version of Quagga ported to the WRT54G, Sveasoft is =
using
Zebra 0.92-something.

* NoCatSplash or Chillispot Captive portals, with a nice Melbourne
Wireless information webpage that pops up when someone attempts to
access a web page in their browser

You can Telnet or SSH into the box and have a play. The shell is =
quite
nice, it even has command completion (press TAB). I do miss MC =
though.
:)

I don't think that it's a good idea to put a directional antenna on =
one
of the antenna connections and an omni on the other. I don't =
think
antenna diversity works that way. But certainly give it a test, =
and
post your results! But I think you'd be better off connecting =
another
AP to one of the WRT54G's ports and using it as a client.
