three main factors that affect it's performance:

1. The version of the driver. I am currently using the 2002-12-09
snapshot, which works reasonably well.
2. The kernel version. Use at least 2.4.18. Most people seem to have more
success with 2.4.20.
3. The RTS threshold. I have been testing with a threshold of 200, which
I thought had solved my problems, but I am still seeing some packet loss
(so I'm going to try out the latest driver from CVS).

The Atmel wireless mailing list is very active and helpful - I would
suggest joining the list and browsing the archives:

Also, there is an updated HOWTO which is useful to get you up & running,
but doesn't have much information (yet) on performance tuning:
