Mumble mumble - bloody network-manager can't handle Ad-Hoc networks correctly, 
first of all it never ever puts the card correctly into ad-hoc mode and when 
you fix that manually it then mucks up the Cell address and so the WRT54GS 
never sees the DHCP requests.

Setting it up in /etc/network/interfaces as an ad-hoc network on channel 10 
with the correct ESSID works fine!

Unfortunately that then makes network-manager ignore the wireless device 
because it's now manually configured. :-(
