That's what I was thinking of, running the internal wireless card as a backbone (at either 54 or 11 megabit speeds), and having the "dumb" Minitars hanging off of the switch, and being routed by the device.

It seems the best way to do this would be way of VLANs, and there has been success on the Sveasoft forums in implementing a VLAN on these machines (thanks Dan for that link).
It appears that all of the other features required for a reasonably full featured routing ap have already been implemented on these devices, so it simply seems like its a job of getting the VLANs set up and these boxes would be ideal for community wireless.
