5.2 is not leagal for outdoor use in Australia unless the power
is so low that its useless.

5.8 Is legal however someone (Access?) is runing many long haul
links on 5.8 and I don't have any idea how they are doing
it without being way over power.

The rules allow 1 watt EIRP for some radios and 4 watts for other.
The US rules allow anything you like as long as you start with 1
watt at the transmitter so most of the US market 5.8 stuff
is legal here if your careful about the antennas on it.
