I had issues with stuffed upmail servers at optus last week. Telstra had
issues as well I think.
You might also want to check proxies/default routes. I had a mate who had
some problems with an old dial up account he had on something like one of
those things keeping its settings wehn he made another account. The IP
addy changed and stuff but proxies/dns were left the same. The braindead
cd that he used for the install set up his mail server as "mail" not
mail.isp.com.au which seemed towork some of the time but would time out if
it took too long to resolve "mail". Sorry its not more detailed, this was
discussed over beer.
