I did this a couple of years ago...  don't think a router is really
necessary....  sybex has a great router Sim...  I think I may still have
it somewhere   8-)

Wish I could help, but if I had one I'd be using it for my learning for

CCNA. :-)

The people at http://www.routersim.com/ do CCNA/CCNP tools including
router 
simulators.  I think they've got a good rep, but don't quote me on that!

Another possibility that isn't Cisco, but may be instructive, is to look
at 
the GNU Zebra routing software. It implements things like BGP, OSPF, etc
and 
has an IOS like interface.
