[MLB-WIRELESS] POE for SVEC AP

Hi Brandon,

I've made a POE kit for my SVEC APs. It's based on the one on the
NYCwireless site here: http://www.nycwireless.net/poe/

I've used the following pinout

      ACCESS POINT SIDE
     NETWORK SIDE

      1 White & Green
     1 White & Green

      2 Green
     2 Green

      3 White & Orange
     3 White & Orange

4 Blue (NEGATIVE 5V to BLACK on the socket)
     4 not used

5 Blue & White (NEGATIVE 5V to BLACK on the socket)
     5 not used

      6 Orange
     6 Orange

7 Brown & White (POSITIVE 5V to YELLOW on the socket)
     7 not used

8 Brown (POSITIVE 5V to YELLOW on the socket)
     8 not used

I bought a two-socket and a one-socket RJ45 wall mount box from
Middentorp... the two socket box is the POE injector, the one-socket box is
bolted onto the bottom of the SVEC APs waterproof box and distributes the
power and the Ethernet to the appropriate sockets on the AP.

CAT 5 has a resistance of approx 1 ohm per 10 metres (round trip, using two
conductors each way). The power supply that comes with the SVEC AP gives
out about 5.15V, and the AP itself will operate with a minimum of 4.5V,
maximum of 7.0V (before you blow up the regulator). The AP will probably
never draw more than 0.5 Amps under normal operation, although I've gotten
it to draw 0.8 Amps in radio test mode. Basically if you want to run your
AP over more than 10 metres of CAT5 you'll need to use a power supply with a
higher voltage than the one supplied.

If you're going shopping, get 2.5mm Short Shaft DC plugs and sockets for the
power, and I'm told a small flat blade screwdriver works well for punching
down wires into krone blocks if you don't have a krone tool. I do have a
krone tool so I don't know myself. :)

Whilst stumbling in my car I discovered a SSID of junction whilst driving
through St Kilda Junction. They had a strong signal, but I don't know
anything more about them.

Not sure what BSSID stands for, but it seems to be the MAC address of other
APs that your AP can see. The "Preferred BSS" is the MAC address of
another AP that your AP will preferentially connect to in Client Mode if
your AP can see more than one BSS.

Wireless Repeater mode doesn't work. It seems to crash the AP, requiring it
to have it's factory defaults reset from the USB utility. There might be a
way to make the Wireless Repeater mode work, but I haven't figured it out
yet. It might have something to do with compiling MIBs, which is a bit over
my head at the moment. :)

There are other things that can be done to the SVEC, including increasing
the output power to 100mW. I've done this but it seems to make connections
unstable. Best to leave the power settings alone I think. Also, there's a
way to change the regulatory domain of the AP (FCC, ETSI, etc) that allows
you to go up to Channel 14. But making this setting "stick" involves
playing with MIB compilers - over my head.

Hope this helps,

Dan
