In Australia the equivalent "personal use/non CB" walkie talkies operate
around 433MHz (item 17)

And they're limited to 25 mW EIRP.  The low power UHF CBs represent better
value for money, IMHO.  Around $80 gives a reasonable little radio with 200
mW power and 40 channels (and probably more of us already have gear
compatible with them).

The other wee little problem with 433 MHz?  Well, you might occasionally get
stomped on by the odd big signal out there...  It just happens to be smack
in the middle of the 70cm amateur band... If you use one, just don't pick a
packet frequency or busy repeater... :-)
