It sounds almost like your real problem was an imdedance
matching problem rather than a lack of power.  Your AP was
putting out enough power, but the power wasn't making it out the
antenna, instead being refected back into the AP and absorbed.
The amplifier has improved things not because of the
gain it provides, but because it has proper 50 ohm terminations,
so your AP is better matched to the antenna.  Only a theory.
