Yay, let's get the list back on track. ;) Here's some general news for
those that may be interested that's actually purely about WIRELESS!

Did a fair bit of testing on saturday at node GBJ, attempting to get a
link to BAE (Michael Borthwick). Hooked up my ~18dB conifer to a pool
cleaning pole (about 6m extended?) and waved it around. Picked up 11
distinct APs in the area, which was a big step up from our previous,
pole-less test, in which we only managed to pick up 1 AP. This tends to
indicate that our previous problem was merely a height related one.
Looks like we made it over some sort of 'wireless horizon'. Panorama pic
off the roof here:

However, although we got some fantastic signal levels from SSID
'stkevinade' (anyone know what that is?), we still got fairly marginal
levels from BAE.

After some slow and painful twiddling and getting as high as we could,
we got enough of a stable signal for a link and ftp session into
Michaels FTP server (you should be able to see us in the logs). a file
or two, but the bendiness of the pole and wind wasn't helping the link
stability. Packets were coming in between 5.5 and 2Mbit/s mostly.

The plan (I believe) is to get a solid, permenant structure up and a
bigger antenna and hopefully solve the above problems - On that note,
anyone know a good, cheap source of 24dB antennas? (I know I can
probably grab some off roofs around the place, but I can't think of
anywhere that has an abundance of the big ones).

In other news, I have registered a new node GIB in richmond, and will be
attempting to link GIB->BAE->GBJ. Possibly more nodes happening soon
around that area. In addition to that, I have just found out a friend is
about to move into an 11th story apartment in South Melbourne (where I
live), which may allow my dream of getting a link out of my low-rise
hole into a reality. I can actually see some of the apartments in South
Melb from GBJ, which means (INSERT DRAMATIC MUSIC HERE) I may be able to
get a full GIB->BAE->GBJ->???->FDF, and all associated/in-between nodes.

Though talk is cheap, at least it's a theoretical possibility now :)

More news as it happens.

	Fenn.
