OK....
So it seems this thread has gone a little off topic.

While I'm aware that 128kbps upstream isn't all that beefy, it would
still be good just to join mesh segments where wireless isn't
possible so we can get some basic connectivity.

The example that comes to mind is routing tables and DNS traffic.
Both would benefit from some basic level of connectivity.

Now...
If you want to talk about the finer points of ADSL and PPPoEoA, go
somewhere else :)

This topic was just suggested to expand the mesh, not become a
technical discussion on DSL technology.
