Subject: [MLB-WIRELESS] Installfest

Ey everyone,
Those unable to attend yesterday's installfest and antenna hack day
missed a pretty good day.
Overall we had about 30+ people attend, with heaps of traffic from the
LUV crowd stopping by and having a look at what we were doing. Some were
even interested in what Melbourne Wireless was all about.
Overall, only about five cantennas were hacked. There were a number of
Pac Mono and conifer Galaxy antennas brought along, but none were
modded.
Three access points were set up for the day: a hacked 802.11b AP in a
diecast box using PoE, and attached to a 12dBi homebrew omni, an 802.11a
AP, and an 802.11b AP on an 8dBi Superpass(?) set up by a small faction
with a tent and loud house music at the far end of the hockey field.
Not much was done in the way of practical field testing. One of the more
interesting things to come out of the day was that bouncing a cantenna
off a Galaxy grid (see pix at
http://melbourne.wireless.org.au/media/photos/index.ttml?dir=meetings/2002-1
1-23_Installfest) resulted in impressive gain, particularly if the cantenna
was offset.
A G3 allowed anyone daring enough to upgrade their Orinoco-based cards
to 128-bit WEP, while a notebook allowed people to flash their cards
with the latest Enterasys firmware. An attempt to set up a SpeakFreely
server wasn't all that successful.
Although on the outside it appears that not much was achieved, the day
was a lot of fun.
Thanks go to Andrew Griffiths for his ability to tie an interesting mix
of working and troublesome equipment together as the need arose through
the day. Thanks to ProFX for the ftp server, backing up AndrewG, and for
remembering to bringing Puffy along, without which the day would have
been a little less interesting. Thanks to TC for his unparalleled
barbecue tekniq, catering, and provision of the main server. Tom, Robert
and (unknown) for the access points. Tom again and Stewart for the
switches (these were vital after we were told two other externally
provided switches were unavailable). Stewart, Troy, Timshel, Ryan, Nick
and Vaskos for all the bits and bobs.
Special thanks also has to got to Kim Perkins, the sysadmin at
Strathcona, for letting us use the venue at no charge. We collected a
bit of money through donations and the barbecue, which Melbourne
Wireless will donate to the school to help it cover its costs.
Again, the event was extremely worthwhile and heaps of fun. Let's do it
again sometime.
- Barry
