Here is the answer I got from an email to one of lucent's official support
adresses.
This calls for some thinkering..

> At this moment, Agere has decided to ship only the World PC Card, supporting
> 11 Channels. When people travel from country to country, they should be able
> to use the ORiNOCO wireless PC Card everywhere: an American should be able
> to use it in Europe, a Belgium should be allowed to use it in the USA.

> So, we advise to all customers in EMEA region to use CH1 to CH11 (hoever
> CH12 and CH13 are allowed as well), to prevent problems, especially in the
> future.

> It is not possible to change the number of channels by firmware. We get
> certification from the goverment and are not allowed to change the product
> afterwards (or should do recertification).

> All support requests require a serial number, in the future you need to
> provide the serial number of the ORiNOCO device you are having issues
> with/inquires about.
