Hi all,

wireless.org.au was unavailable from melb uni for a few
hours today.

I think you will find that (unlike email MX records), the
secondary DNS servers really should be available most of the time
and they should give correct results __all__ of the time. Today,
1 is broken and 1 is giving wrong answers.

This might be causing some of the email problems... I know
that my uni machine couldnt get to wireless.org.au today.
As a sysadmin, Id look to fix DNS problems before looking at mail
problems.

Did someone forget to change an SOA/serial number or something?
Has the DNS moved recently?

cheers,
cam

PS: I know I should have made this post shorter, but given
recent content on this list, I figure someone may actually
learn how to use dig from mine and no other list members
were flamed in the making of this post :)

Lets look at telstra's thinking on wireless.org.au's ip
number (the 'A' line).

korg at nephilim ~/src/AditiTest $ dig @ns1.telstra.net wireless.org.au

; <<>> DiG 9.2.0rc3 <<>> @ns1.telstra.net wireless.org.au

----------------------------------------

Ok, so no IP number.. nowonder I cant get to it.

Lets try those last two secondaries....

----------------------------------------

korg at nephilim ~/src/AditiTest $ dig @ns.iinet.net.au wireless.org.au

; <<>> DiG 9.2.0rc3 <<>> @ns.iinet.net.au wireless.org.au
;; global options: printcmd

----------------------------------------

Oh, look at that.. 'NS' value.. hmmm. its not the same as
the telstra one... thats a bad thing. Probably means an old
DNS file somewhere? Why are there two seperate DNS records
for wireless.org.au?

Well on to the last one secondary.

----------------------------------------

korg at nephilim ~/src/AditiTest $ dig @ns2.regasia.com wireless.org.au

; <<>> DiG 9.2.0rc3 <<>> @ns2.regasia.com wireless.org.au
;; global options: printcmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

----------------------------------------

So, that'd be bad too then.

When one woman was asked how long she had been going to symphony concerts,
she paused to calculate and replied, "Forty-seven years -- and I find I mind
it less and less."
