How bad is really really bad?  What sort of distance could this achieve with
a pringle can or other home made antanae?  (I have no idea!)

Please don't forget that not everyone is going to be able to afford (or
maybe even need) or require a "top o the range" setup.  If there is a card
that is easy to setup and get going many people will use it purley for that
reason.

Others may not have to transmit very far and therfore won't need anything
more.

I for one am looking for a PCI card rather than a PCMCIA and adapter because
"i just like them better" plus i have more spare PC's than i have laptops
(none)

Maybe the cards should be rated by specs and then distance achieved.  The
consumer then gets to make a descision based on quantifyable outcomes rather
than "she no good mate!"
