Well, that's not as silly as it sounds.  Probably the best way to illustrate
it is with an example.  In radio foxhunting (hidden transmitter hunts), a
device called a "sniffer" is used to pinpoint the location of the
transmitter.  One of the most common operating modes is the so called
"whoopee" mode, which basically uses a tone to indicate signal strength.
The pitch of the tone increases as the signal strength increases and
vice-versa.  That makes it easy to look up and see where to go (and avoid
blackberry bushes!) while getting a reliable indication of where the signal
is coming from.

I can see this sort of thing being useful with Netstumbler.  Plug in the
headphones and bury the laptop in the bag and listen for the next node.  Or
a useful way of getting relative signal strength while wardriving in city
traffic. :-)
