<div>well i'd like to run a linux box for 3 reasons: improved performance and stability on the old pcs (Damn small linux), because its free and legit and because i want to improve my skills on the linux front.</div>
<div>however im happy to use either which one ur comfortable with.<br> </div>
<div>It's often better to separate your routing infrastructure from your<br>servers. This is especially true with wireless, because you can then<br>run your routers up a mast using PoE to power them, and the PC can<br>
live safely inside, connected via Cat 5 or wireless to the router.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>yeah in the very near future im thinking i'll probably stick a router or an accesspoint up there with the canopy connected and then port that into my server, but for now i only have a crappy netgear router with stock antenna (i'm doubting whether even i wll be able to listen to the device from within my house with one of those crappy stock antennas) and no weather proof box so its not so much of a solution. so basically for the time being itll go, canopy, server, cat5 to netgear router within my house, this way i need no weather proof boxes and i dont have to get a higher gain antenna to propogate the router further.

<div>nah part of the problem is i dont have an openwrt router (still researching the best ap/router for my purposes and budget).</div>
<div> </div>
<div>part of the idea however was to learn how to put to use old pcs in a functional and useful manner. what i had in mind was to basically have the canopy go into a dedicated pc in my shed so that i could run it as a general purpose server for melbwireless and my household.
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>with this server i hope to run DChubs, emule servers or some sort of p2p filesharing server, gamer servers, host websites on the melbwireless, try to do voip all that sort of fun stuff. I also want to experiment with bandwith throttling, virtual private networks remote admin.
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>so yeah id like to go the server route to begin with.</div>
