BigPond customers have an unexpected early Christmas present — unlimited
usage all weekend.

An email sent to customers advising them of a major network upgrade, says
the ISP's usage meter will be unavailable for use from about 5pm Friday
until about midday Sunday.

While there is nothing unusual about temporary outages on Telstra's usage
meter, this upgrade seems unusually charged with Christmas cheer: "To
protect you from being disadvantaged in any way, we will not be charging
you for any of your usage while the usage meter is not available," the
email says.

"Your weekend's usage will not be added to your total usage. Once the usage
meter starts updating, it will display your approximate usage for the
month, excluding any usage incurred while the usage meter was not available
over the weekend."

BigPond customers were tonight canvassing the possibility that the message
was a clever hoax to encourage customers to run over their limit.

Some users also questioned whether the BigPond network could handle a
'downloading rampage' after the recent email failures due to lack of
network headroom.
