[MLB-WIRELESS] I need to borrow lappy p/s

That's because they use a 3-pin connector. You have the usual ground and
+ve, but there's also a 3rd sense/communication pin.

The ground is the usual outer ring, but the +ve is the inner of the outer
ring. The 3rd pin is actually the tiny center pin (it's not the ground). I
hope that makes sense lol.

Many computers now use the same physical connector but are not interoperable
between manufacturers because of this extra sense pin. This is used to tell
the laptop what type of charger is connected (such as what wattage), but
also prevents non-manufacturer chargers from working.

This would also explain the behaviour with the 3rd party supplies.

Check this link for more info. It relates to Dell chargers, but I think the
principles are the same.

Hi,

Some HP laptops are very picky about their power adapter, and won't use it
unless its something it likes.
Mine flatly refuses to accept any of the clone adaptor's I have tried on it,
even though the voltage etc seem correct.

Quite happy to use the correct HP power adaptor though...

Regards
Roger
