[MLB-WIRELESS] Cheap 7dB antennas

Hi all

I bought a couple of these from eBay the other day...

Anyone know if they are any good?  I haven't had a chance to test it yet.  
Also, does anyone know if this sort of antenna requires a ground plane?  
With a magnetic base I'm guessing it's intended to be used on the roof of a 
vehicle, or otherwise mounted on a metal surface.  But is this a 
requirement?
