If you're using the WRT54G as your router, then any modem that supports 
bridge mode (the vast majority) would work. I've found that if you're 
running the modem in bridge mode, then even some of the cheap and nasty 
ones can work quite well and have days of uptime.

It all really depends on what you want to do. A modem it bridge mode 
hooked to a WRT54G would be a quite capable setup - and be pretty much 
what the WAG54G is - except in two different boxes.

I don't believe OpenWRT etc will work on the WAG54G - I certainly 
haven't heard of any DSL modem drivers etc as part of the OpenWRT 
package - but if it presents itself as an ethernet interface, then these 
may not be required. The OpenWRT hardware guide 
(http://www.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Hardware) does not show the WAG54G, 
so you could probably say that it won't work.
