The CUWireless project (http://www.cuwireless.net/) is working towards getting
a plug-and-play wireless mesh package for i386 and other CPUs up an running
(it's NetBSD based). They already are well on the way and have a working
mesh running but need a developer to work on gateway/advertiser code which is
needed once the mesh starts getting large. So if you are idle and want to
hack some C vis-a-vis wireless, let them know!
The idea of their system is to get a proper mesh based network running on
cheap 486/586 style hardware with the minimal of software install and
configuration (ie install the software, put up an antenna and you're off).
It's exactly the type of thing Melbwireless has been trying to achieve. Once
it's operational there is no reason why it can't be made to run in the Linux
based AP's that are proliferating as NetBSD should run on them too. Don't be
scared, as NetBSD isn't too much of a stretch to learn if you are already
comfy with Linux.
