No digital for new radio amateurs

The Australian Communications Authority (ACA) has rejected strong support
from existing radio amateurs to include digital modes of transmission in
its proposed new amateur radio entry level or Foundation Licence.

The details are contained in the ACA’s “Outcomes of the Review of the
Amateur Service Regulation” on the ACA’s website.

A telephony and hand-key Morse licence won’t be attractive. It must also
allow the use of digital modes and the 2.4GHz and 5.6GHz bands.

The ACA wants to restrict new entrants to Amateur Radio to the analogue age
and hand-key telegraphy age. This will deny them use of an enormous range
of software based options currently available, and continuing to emerge.

Do you have an opinion? The ACA is receiving comment on its proposals via
email at amateurs at aca.gov.au
