I can't understand how someone could be that bad. The CCNA course from what 
I've experience of it so far seems very thorough, and eavesdropping on the 
more advanced students classes shows that sort of stuff is covered very early 
on.

I've actually been using Cisco's on & off for around 9 years or so, but 
unfortunately these days people seem to want to see something on paper to 
prove it. The good thing is that I'm learning all the stuff that my 
experience hasn't covered, things like FDDI (heard of, seen it, never had to 
use it) and wiring regulations (we were required to use external contractors 
for installations).

So would I. I think the problem is that people see the possible rewards and 
are tempted to use any means possible to get that certification. Problem is, 
if the people who get through didn't actually learn anything by getting the 
certification all that happens, as you say, is to devalue the certification.
