If you did go the DECT, you could also plug something like an old Apple
Airport into the line as well as it has a builtin 56K modem and 802.11b AP
for bridged net access.  Wire this up to an external antenna was well and
your Dad would be set and fully mobile in the house and property for phone
and internet (mutually exclusive, of course).  Plus with multiple DECT
units he could roam about the property to a degree and be able to be
paged.
