I guess it would depend on what the power output of the laser was.

My old physics department at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth did work on 
gravity waves (not gravitational waves, big difference) and used a LIDAR 
system using a pulsed green laser to measure the changing density of air at 
different altitudes (feeding back into a DEC PDP-10 running RTX, IIRC).  Very 
cool to watch (it was visible for miles around). Their website is at:
