For anyone who's interested, there are many companies now offering
equipment based on the 802.11g draft specification, with more to follow.
Broadcom (http://www.broadcom.com/) have made full speed draft-802.11g
(54Mbps) chips and call their implementation of the current draft
802.11g standard '54g' - products with '54g' logos will connect to each
other.

If you don't want to go with Apple products (either to save money or due
to religious reasons ;) then have a look at others such as D-Link,
Linksys.. Even AMD are intending to release 54g products. FYI, Apple's
website doesn't mention '54g' anywhere, so they're probably not using
the Broadcom chips.

More information for 54g partners should be found at
http://www.54g.org/, but Broadcom are taking forever to get their stuff
together.

Despite Linksys tell me they'll have their 54g access points in
Australian stores by the end of December last year, I'm still yet to see
one.

54 Mbps AirPort Extreme, based on the cutting-edge IEEE 802.11g wireless
draft specification, delivers nearly five times the bandwidth of the
802.11b standard. The new AirPort Extreme Base Station can serve up to
50 Mac and Windows users simultaneously. It comes with everything from
wireless printing to a USB or Ethernet printer to power tools for
administrators, and starts at $199.
Lets you use wireless bridging to widen your range beyond the standard
150-foot coverage

You have to love Apple.
And you could then run it on a 17" laptop
