For me, wireless was an advantage.

While there was lightning (I had no mast where I was), I used my internal
wireless LAN + laptop to stay completely isolated from any cables, so I
could still be on the net (relatively) safely, and check the BOM website :)

All my gear survived, though I can't say the same for the carpets :(
