Hmm, that's only 2W.  If you're going to use a 12V solar system, I'd
strongly recommend using a switchmode regulator to bring the voltage down.
That would probably save 50% power, compared to a linear regulator which
would dissipate (i.e. waste) at least 7/12's of the supplied power as heat.
A switchmode regulator should be 80-90% efficient.
