And the GSM audio compression codec (only "standard" GSM 6.10, not EFR or 
half rate) is widely available, in fact, we were all probably using it last 
Friday at the MW meet (GSM is the default codec in Speak Freely).  And 
Speak Freely is open source, so one can examine the code.
