Rojone have an 8dB for $180ish i think.
You could also try making one, I have heard of several people who have had
some success with the GuerillaNet(?) design.
You might as well get hold of an old Galaxy from one of your neighbours as I
have seen plenty in the area, and modify it.
See how you go with that because it's free and just involves a tiny bit of
work. If you find you want an Omni later you can always sell this off to
someone else in the group for $20 or donate it to another newbie.

What's the cheapest omni's around atm? Is it simply a case of getting
an omni instead of a directional to become a node? Are there any issues
with having too many nodes in one area? Oh, and how are people managing
IP numbers atm?

(In Coburg, shortly buying gear with any luck)
