It is common (though not very) to verify that the HELO/EHLO greeting
given by the SMTP client is a valid name. This is perfectly valid
even if a large number of sites don't setup their mail servers
correctly and thus can lead to lost mail.
It is also common to check that the envelope_sender address is in a
valid domain, because if it is not you won't be able to reply to the
person anyway and indicates that the address is wrong (and may be from
a spammer).
Mail servers that reject mail like this are just trying to filter out
spam. I receive a lot of mail and filtering this way avoids me
receiving a lot of junk.
It's a shame that a lot of people don't know how to correctly setup
their mail servers.
