The problem is quite real, as demonstrated by a number of list users.

Points to ponder:

A problem doesn't go away just because most people aren't affected by it.

Advice given about DNS in books written by people who had a large part to
play in the creation of the DNS is not to be disregarded lightly.

Backup MX's are a good idea in any case.  However, a backup MX is no
substitute for a fully-functional primary MX.
