Hello syd-wireless,
Just finished coding another string of updates...
They include, being able to set notifications, if a person is within
5km of your location and they either add a node or update a node's
status to testing/full... I've also setup a wiki on the NodeDB site,
that any node can link into, rather then the old method of relying on
each group to have their own, as most didn't have one setup nor
plans to set one up at any time in the near future...
In future the notifications may be a setting and you can alter the
distance, but while I'm making sure it's working how it's supposed
to and not spamming people by accident, which, depending how bad the
typo could generate a lot of mail *grin*
I ditched the idea of random positioning, and instead the DB will
simply refuse to zoom in any further, the default for the entire
database will remain at 1km resolution, people are free to change
this from 10km to 0m, and if the database is allowed to zoom in on
a nearby node, your node will stop displaying on the map, there are
numerous reasons for this, not just the obvious theft reason. People
have expressed concern to myself and others, they have virtually
been stalked, such as phone calls in the middle of the night and
being asked about wireless stuff from complete strangers, to people
going to their house trying to connect to them. For those of you that
think putting in slightly incorrect values will solve it, think
again, people drive around the immediate area looking for/sniffing
for your antenna that looks like a WLAN setup, and that was under
the old mapblast with the very inaccurate mapping information. While
no system is perfect, I've made all attempts I can to reduce this
from happening, if you set your zoom preference to 10km virtually
nothing is identifiable, other then suburb. So get everyone you know
involved and then half where ever your from involved and they won't
bother you.
I've almost finished the Australia wide display of nodes, this will
be a clickable image map as soon as possible, anyone able to tell me
if there is a maximum number of area parts an image map can have?
Currently there is potentially 293 nodes (out of ~1330) that could
be culled in a about 3 weeks time, if you go into the Node DB and
your listed as seen for more then 90 days then your most likely on
the attempting to be contacted list or you may have already been
sent an email about this. There is also a large number of people in
the NodeDB with incorrect or invalid email addresses, all new email
accounts are tested and need to be confirmed within 48 hours from
now on, otherwise the system could be set to remove your node,
myself and others that admin different regions are tired of all the
bounced messages and felt this is potentially the only way to stop
this from happening...
There is currently about 45 regions across all states and
territories in the country, I am currently looking for expressions
of interest in managing the other regions, so far Sydney, Adelaide
and Mudgee are covered, with an offer to the existing admin of
Melbourne Wireless, if they wish to take me up on it to manage the
Melbourne section. There will be backup scripts, so that these
people can keep additional backups apart from what currently
happens.
If I've forgotten anything about updates to the NodeDB site, they
should appear on the Updates section that I'll be finishing off
soonish... http://www.nodedb.com/updates/
