Because it's fun and interesting. I am interested in exploring wireless
and associated hardware and software required to make it into a dynamic and
efficient system. I am also interested in creating an alternative network
to do all the usual things I do - mainly games. And the Coolness Factor.
>1. Melbourne Wireless LAN is it to contain Internet or Not.
No. It's illegal without a carrier license from the government and who the
hell here has that sort of money? Sneaking some sort of gateway through
Optus cable would be found out and that avenue closed soon enough. Running
it through a bank of dialup modems ain't broadband. And with the cost of a
megabytes running 18c, even $10 a month wouldn't nearly pay for all the
leeching that'd go on. How do you keep account of who owes what
money? How do you enforce payment? It's not as simple as bunging in the
card and an aerial on the roof and loading the Windows driver and voila,
you're on the Internet. But see my first point, it's illegal without a
license. There is nothing stopping anyone setting up Internet access with
their buddies over wireless and keeping it hush hush.
I think that Melbourne Wireless as a forum for likeminded people to get
together to try and create a metro network that is functional and robust,
the prime motivation should be to make it work and work well simply for the
sake of it. Trying to get Internet access should be a low, low
priority. If the licensing regulations change later, then all the better
for us.
