This idea is not silly, and in fact there was an article in today's Age
(newspaper) about a variant of this idea (yes guys, my article again). In
that example, it was the use of the Internet as a voice "wormhole" between
distant radio systems, but radio amateurs have been using "wormhole"
techniques for over 10 years on the packet radio network.

I was chatting keyboard to keyboard in "on air" conference rooms around the
world irc style long before I had Internet access and long before the
Internet grew beyond the world of academics! :)

When everyone else was restricted to their local chat BBS, I was chatting
globally - and it was wireless as well.

Hey guys, the techniques are well understood, and have been used in non
profit data and now voice networks for years. There's absolutely no reason
why they can't be used for wireless networks either, and we should keep our
addressing policy open to such possibilities. We don't even have to
reinvent the wheel to use IP tunneling with wireless networks, it's been
going on for over a decade (albeit at the blinding speeds of 1200 and 9600
bps :) ). We just have to be a little more clever with our choice of
tunneling protocols, as we have to cope with dynamic addressing issues,
something which the ham packjet network doesn't have to contend with (as
its wormholes tend to have static IP addresses).

Well, it will happen one day.
